Rebuilding Ancient Movement in a Modern World

The Modern Human Body Problem


Have you ever watched a toddler squat?

Not a half-squat. A full squat. Heels flat on the ground. Hips below the knees. Back straight. Perfectly balanced. No effort. No coaching. No warm-up routine.

Just a human body doing what human bodies were designed to do.

Now think about the last time you did that.

For most adults, especially people over forty, a full squat is either impossible, uncomfortable, or something they stopped thinking about years ago without ever deciding to stop.

Here is what I find interesting about that.

We were all born with that ability. Every single one of us. It did not get trained into that toddler. It is the default. It is what the body looks like before modern life gets involved.

Which means the question is not how do we build something new.

The question is, what happened to what was already there?

But before we go further, I need to add something important. Because this is where a lot of fitness content gets it wrong.

Mobility is not the goal.

Controlled movement is.

I have worked with folks who could squat all the way to the floor. Full range. No problem. And they were in pain. Chronic pain. The kind that never fully went away no matter what they tried.

How?

Because being able to move through a range and being able to control that movement are two completely different things.

Hypermobility, having more range of motion than the body can actually stabilize, is its own problem. The joint moves freely. But the surrounding structures cannot manage what happens inside that range under load. The fascia is loose where it should have tone. The nervous system does not have a reliable map of where the joint is in space. And the body compensates bracing, guarding, overloading other structures, to protect the instability it cannot control.

Range of motion without stability is not freedom. It is a different kind of fragility.

So when I talk about rebuilding ancient movement, I am not talking about getting more flexible. I am talking about building movement that the body can own. Move into. Control. Load. Trust.

That is a very different goal. And it matters.


We Did Not Evolve to Be Stiff

I want to challenge something a lot of people believe without realizing they believe it.

The idea that stiffness, limited range of motion, and physical decline are just what happens as you get older.

Or at least, I do not think it is the whole truth.

Anthropologists have found that humans were designed around four fundamental movement patterns. Standing. Walking. Running. And throwing. These are not gym exercises. They are the operating system the human body was built on, the movements that shaped the skeleton, the joints, the fascia, the nervous system over hundreds of thousands of years.

In populations today that still live close to those movement patterns, hunter-gatherer communities, subsistence farmers, people whose daily lives require constant physical engagement with the world, researchers do not find the same rates of chronic pain, joint degeneration, and mobility loss that are common in modern Western populations.

Same human body. Different environment. Different outcome.

That is not aging. That is mismatch.

And if it is mismatch, it can be addressed.

What “Ancient Movement” Actually Means

I am not suggesting anyone go live in the woods.

I drink tea and I enjoy air conditioning and I have no plans to change either of those things.

But there are movement patterns the body was built for that have largely disappeared from modern daily life. And the research, as well as what I see in my work every single day, suggests that reintroducing them changes things significantly.

Not in a complicated way. In a very specific, very practical way.

Full range hip movement, with control.

The hip is one of the most mobile joints in the body. It was designed to move in multiple directions, forward, back, sideways, rotationally. Daily life for most of human history demanded all of those directions constantly.

Modern life demands one. Sitting.

The fascia surrounding the hip adapts to what it does most. Held in ninety degrees of flexion for hours at a time, it thickens along the front and weakens along the back. The glutes, the most powerful muscles connected to that joint, stop firing the way they should.

The result is a hip that looks fine on an X-ray and functions like a door with a rusty hinge.

But here is the important part and this is where a lot of rehab and fitness work misses the target.

The goal is not to open the hip up and call it done. Range without stability is just a different problem. The goal is to restore movement the body can actually control, load through, stabilize in, trust under demand.

A hip that can move freely but cannot be controlled under load is not a healthy hip. It is an unstable one. And the body knows the difference. The nervous system knows the difference. It will guard and compensate around instability just as readily as it guards around restriction.

Ground-based movement.

Getting up from and down to the floor was a daily reality for most of human history. It requires hip flexibility, ankle mobility, spinal range, balance, and whole-body coordination.

For most modern adults over forty, it has become an event.

I do not say that to be harsh. I say it because the ability to transition from the floor to standing and back is one of the clearest indicators of whole-body functional capacity. And research has actually connected this, the ability to get up from the floor without assistance is associated with longevity in older adults.

The floor is not something to avoid. It is something to revisit.

Carrying loads.

Walking while carrying weight is one of the oldest human activities there is. It works the grip, the shoulders, the core, the stabilizing system, and the gait all at once. It builds the kind of functional strength that actually transfers to daily life.

Not because it is a clever exercise.

Because it is what the body was designed to do.

Walking on real surfaces.

Flat pavement in cushioned shoes is a very recent invention in the context of human history.

The human foot has twenty-six bones, thirty-three joints, and over a hundred muscles, tendons, and ligaments. That complexity exists for a reason, to navigate varied terrain, to adapt in real time, to feed rich information to the nervous system with every step.

Walking on grass, gravel, uneven ground even occasionally, reactivates systems that flat pavement has put to sleep. The foot wakes up. The proprioceptive system gets better information. Balance improves.

Not because you did something new.

Because you did something old.

The Body Does Not Need More Flexibility

Here is a reframe worth sitting with.

Most people think rebuilding the body means getting more flexible. More mobile. More range.

I think that is the wrong goal.

I have seen plenty of flexible people in pain. Women who can touch their toes, who can get into deep positions, who have more range than most and who still have chronic pain, poor stability, and a nervous system that does not trust the body it lives in.

Range of motion is not the destination. Controlled, functional movement is.

The toddler squat is not impressive because of the range. It is impressive because the whole system the joints, the fascia, the nervous system, is working together to produce that movement with ease and control. Nothing is fighting anything else. The body is organized.

That organization is what gets lost. Not the flexibility.

And that means the goal is not to stretch the body into new positions. It is to rebuild the coordination, the stability, and the fascial communication that make those positions safe, reliable, and usable under real-world demand.

That is a different conversation. And it produces a different result.

The Role of the Fascia in All of This

I come back to fascia in almost every conversation I have. Not because it is fashionable, it is not. Most people have never heard it discussed the way I am about to discuss it.

But because it is the key to understanding why the body holds on to the patterns of modern life so stubbornly and why restoring ancient movement requires more than just doing new exercises.

The fascia adapts to what the body does most. When the body sits for hours every day, year after year, the fascia thickens and contracts along the lines of that posture. When the body avoids certain ranges of motion; the deep squat, the full hip extension, the overhead reach, the fascia adapts to their absence. It closes off the territory.

And because the fascia communicates to the muscles, not the other way around, the muscles reflect whatever the fascia is doing. Tight where the fascia is braced. Weak where the fascial signal has gone quiet.

This is why stretching does not hold. You can stretch a muscle and restore some temporary length. But if the fascial network driving that muscle has not changed, the muscle will return to the pattern the fascia is sending.

Real restoration requires working with the fascial tissue directly. Releasing the restrictions that have built up. Rehydrating the tissue. Restoring the mobility of the network so it can begin transmitting different signals.

Only then does the movement the body was designed for become genuinely accessible again.

This Is Not About Going Backwards

I want to be clear about something.

This is not about rejecting modern life. It is not nostalgia. It is not a suggestion that everyone needs to exercise more.

It is about a very specific thing.

The body was built for a certain kind of engagement with the physical world. That engagement has been largely removed. And the body, which adapts to whatever environment it lives in, has adapted to its absence.

Rebuilding ancient movement in a modern world means intentionally reintroducing what was removed. Not dramatically. Not all at once. In ways that are appropriate for where the body actually is right now.

For some people that starts with something as simple as taking off their shoes in the backyard for ten minutes a day. Or choosing stairs over an elevator. Or spending five minutes transitioning between sitting and standing on the floor while watching television.

These are not workouts. They are inputs. Signals to the nervous system and the fascial network that the body is being asked to do more than sit.

And the body, which was designed for exactly this, responds.

What Changes When You Rebuild

Here is what I see in the folks who do this work.

It does not happen all at once. But it is consistent.

The hips open up. Not because they were stretched into submission, because the fascial tissue reorganized and the joint had permission to move again.

The posture changes. Not because someone was reminded to stand up straight, because the structures that support upright posture started receiving the signals they needed.

The balance improves. Not because balance was practiced in isolation, because the whole system started getting better information and responding to it more accurately.

The chronic things quiet down. The nagging hip. The persistent lower back. The shoulder that always had something to say. Not always completely. But noticeably. Because the load that was concentrated in the wrong places started distributing the way it was designed to.

And something harder to measure changes too.

Confidence.

Not the kind you talk yourself into. The kind that comes from a body that has earned it. From knowing, not hoping, not telling yourself, that your body can handle what comes.

That is what rebuilding ancient movement actually produces.

Not a younger body.

A more capable one.

Four Places to Start

These are not a program. They are starting points, ways to begin reintroducing the movement the body was built for, with the control and stability that makes it actually useful.

1. Visit the floor every day. Sit on it. Move on it. Get up from it without using furniture if you can, and work toward that if you cannot. The goal is not just getting down there, it is being able to control the transitions. Up and down. Slowly. With awareness. Five minutes counts.

2. Walk on something other than pavement. Grass, gravel, a trail, an uneven sidewalk. Let the foot do its job. Let the nervous system receive the input it was designed for. Start short if balance is a concern, the point is to reintroduce the challenge, not to fall.

3. Carry something. Walk from the car to the house without wheeling or rolling. Carry the bag instead of pushing the cart for part of the trip. Load the system the way it was designed to be loaded. Notice which side feels different from the other that asymmetry is information.

4. Move your hips slowly through varied directions. Not just forward and back. Sideways. Rotationally. In whatever range is currently available and focus on control, not depth. The goal is not to see how far you can go. It is to own the range you have. Depth without control is not progress. It is just more range with the same underlying problem.

None of these require a gym. None of them require equipment. All of them require intention.

And all of them are sending the body a signal, that it is being asked to move, to stabilize, and to show up.

This Is Where the Month Has Been Building

We started this month talking about the mismatch between modern environments and the body that lives in them.

We talked about what chairs and screens took from the four fundamental movement patterns the body was built around.

We talked about how convenience, however well-intentioned, removes the demand the body depends on to stay capable.

And now we are here. At the practical question.

Not what did the body lose. But what can be done about it.

The answer is not complicated. But it does require being honest about where things are and intentional about what comes next.

That is the work. And it is available to anyone willing to do it.
