The Modern Human Body Problem
There is a pattern I see so consistently in my work that it has stopped surprising me, though it never stops mattering.
Someone walks in. They are not dramatically injured. They have not had surgery. They have not been in an accident. They have simply been living their life working, sitting, commuting, managing everything that modern life asks of them and at some point, without a clear moment they can point to, their body started to feel like it was working against them.
Stiff in the morning. Tight through the hips. A lower back that complains after long periods of sitting. Shoulders that have crept forward so gradually they barely noticed until someone pointed it out in a photo. Energy that flags earlier in the day than it used to.
And when I ask them what changed, most of them say the same thing.
I don’t know. I didn’t do anything. I just started feeling this way.
That answer is more accurate than most people realize. Because in most cases, they didn’t do anything. The environment did.
A Parable About a Fish
There is an old idea in biology that goes something like this:
If you want to understand why a fish behaves the way it does, you have to understand the water it lives in.
A fish is designed for a specific environment. Its body, its systems, its entire way of functioning emerged over millions of years to match the particular demands of that environment. Put it in water that is the wrong temperature, the wrong salinity, the wrong chemistry and the fish does not suddenly become a different fish. It just starts struggling. The same body. A different environment. A completely different outcome.

Human beings are not so different.
Our bodies the skeleton, the fascia, the nervous system, the movement patterns we are capable of, did not emerge in an office. They did not emerge sitting in a car for forty-five minutes each way. They did not emerge in front of a screen for eight hours a day, in a chair that holds the hips at ninety degrees and parks the spine in a position it was never designed to maintain for hours at a time.
They emerged from hundreds of thousands of years of varied, continuous, load-bearing movement across uneven terrain. Squatting. Carrying. Climbing. Walking long distances. Changing positions constantly. Using the full range of every joint, every day, without a second thought.
That is the water we were designed for.
And most of us are no longer swimming in it.
What the Body Was Actually Built to Do
This is not nostalgia for a simpler time. It is physiology.
The human body is not a static structure. It is a dynamic, adaptive system that requires movement varied, regular, full-range movement to maintain its integrity. Every system in the body depends on it.
The fascia, the connective tissue web that communicates throughout the entire body and signals to the muscles, requires movement to stay hydrated and responsive. When it is held in the same position for extended periods, it begins to adapt to that position. It thickens and shortens along the lines of the posture it is held in most often. It loses the fluid mobility that allows it to glide, transmit clear signals, and respond appropriately to load.
The joints depend on movement for their nutrition. Cartilage has no direct blood supply, it receives the nutrients it needs through the compression and decompression of movement. A joint that is not moving through its full range is a joint that is not being adequately nourished. Over time, it becomes less resilient, less responsive, and more vulnerable to the kind of degeneration that gets blamed on aging when it is often more accurately described as disuse.
The nervous system builds its map of the body through the proprioceptive signals that movement generates. When movement is restricted, when joints are held in narrow ranges and movement patterns become repetitive and limited the nervous system’s representation of the body’s capabilities shrinks. The map becomes vague. And a nervous system working from a vague map becomes more protective, more cautious, more likely to interpret ordinary demands as potential threats.
The muscles, which follow the signals transmitted by the fascia atrophy in the ranges they are not used. They shorten in the positions they are held. They lose their ability to generate and absorb force across the full range of motion that daily life actually requires.
None of this is aging. All of it is environment.

Let’s make this concrete, because the mismatch between modern environments and human physiology shows up in specific, predictable ways.
Prolonged sitting is perhaps the most widespread issue. The human hip was designed to move through a wide range of motion flexion, extension, rotation, abduction. Sitting holds it in a fixed position of flexion for hours at a time. The hip flexors shorten. The glutes which are designed to be among the most powerful muscles in the body, become inhibited and underactive. The fascia along the front of the hip thickens and contracts. The lower back, no longer supported by a properly functioning posterior chain, begins to compensate and eventually complain.
This is not a sitting problem in isolation. It is a cumulative exposure problem. An hour of sitting is not the issue. Eight hours a day, five days a week, fifty weeks a year, for twenty years, that is an environment. And the body has adapted to it.
Screen-based work has repositioned the head and neck in a way that was essentially unknown to the human body for most of its existence. The average adult head weighs approximately ten to twelve pounds in a neutral position. For every inch the head moves forward of that neutral position, which is what looking at a screen at desk height tends to produce, the effective load on the cervical spine doubles. At just two to three inches of forward head position, the neck and upper back are managing the equivalent of twenty to thirty pounds of additional load. All day. Every day.
The fascia and tissues of the upper back and neck respond the way any structure under sustained, excessive load responds. They tighten. They thicken. They brace. And over time, what began as a postural adaptation becomes a structural reality.
Flat, uniform surfaces have removed the proprioceptive challenge that varied terrain used to provide. The human foot contains twenty-six bones, thirty-three joints, and over a hundred muscles, tendons, and ligaments, an extraordinarily complex system designed to navigate uneven ground, to adapt and respond dynamically to changes in terrain, to constantly feed rich proprioceptive information to the nervous system about position, load, and stability. Most modern adults spend almost all of their time on flat, uniform surfaces in shoes that further dampen the foot’s sensory input.
The result is a foot and ankle system that has become underused and underresponsive and a nervous system that has lost some of its most important real-time information about where the body is in space.
The elimination of floor-based living has removed one of the most demanding and beneficial movement patterns the human body performs. Getting up from and down to the floor, in all its varied forms requires hip mobility, ankle mobility, spinal flexibility, and full-body coordination. In many traditional cultures and in the environments our bodies evolved in, this happened dozens of times a day. In most modern Western lives, it happens rarely if at all. The ranges of motion it requires have quietly disappeared in a significant portion of the adult population over 50.
Why This Gets Misread as Aging
Here is the part that I think matters most and that I want to say as directly as I can.
Most of the physical changes people in their fifties and sixties attribute to aging are more accurately attributed to decades of environmental mismatch.
The stiff hips. The tight lower back. The forward shoulders. The reduced balance. The fatigue. The loss of movement confidence. These are not inevitable features of growing older. They are predictable outcomes of spending decades in environments that do not match what the body was designed for and of doing very little to counteract that mismatch.
This distinction matters enormously because it changes what is possible.
If these things are the result of aging, they are largely beyond your control. You manage them. You accommodate them. You accept them as the price of time.
If they are the result of environmental mismatch, which the evidence strongly suggests they largely are, then they are addressable. Not fully reversible in every case, and not without real work. But addressable. Changeable. Improvable in ways that matter significantly for how you feel and function day to day.
The body is an adaptive system. It adapted to the modern environment over years and decades. It can adapt back, or toward something better, with the right inputs.
What Addressing the Mismatch Actually Looks Like
This is not about rejecting modern life. It is about introducing the inputs the body was designed to receive, alongside whatever the modern environment provides.

It means moving through ranges the body was designed for but no longer visits regularly. Full hip extension. Deep hip flexion. Rotational movement through the spine and thorax. Overhead reach through the full shoulder complex. Floor-based transitions.
It means loading the body in varied ways, not just the same three exercises repeated in the same plane of motion, but movement that challenges balance, coordination, proprioception, and the body’s ability to manage unpredictable demands. The kind of variety that uneven terrain, varied loads, and three-dimensional daily life used to provide automatically.
It means paying attention to the fascia because the fascia is what has encoded the postural adaptations of years of modern life, and the fascia is what communicates to the muscles that follow. Addressing restriction at the level of the fascial network, rather than just stretching individual muscles, is what creates genuine and lasting change in how the body holds itself and moves.
And it means understanding that this is not a problem to be solved by one good workout per week. The environmental exposure is daily and cumulative. The response needs to be regular and intentional, built into the fabric of how you move through your life, not just what you do in a gym three times a week.
Four Signs Your Body Is Showing Environmental Mismatch
Before your next appointment, your next class, your next attempt to stretch your way through the tightness, here are four signs worth recognizing for what they actually are:
1. Your hips feel tightest first thing in the morning and after sitting for long periods. This is the fascia and surrounding tissues reflecting the position they have been held in most. The morning stiffness is not your joints rusting overnight. It is your body waking up from hours in a position that accumulated compression without the movement needed to restore it.
2. Your upper back and neck are almost always tense, regardless of how much you stretch them. Forward head posture driven by screen work creates a structural load problem that stretching the surface tissue cannot resolve. The fascia has adapted to the forward position. The tension will keep returning until the underlying pattern is addressed.
3. You feel more balanced and coordinated on some surfaces than others. Grass, gravel, uneven pavement, if these require noticeably more concentration than flat ground, your proprioceptive system has been under-challenged by uniform surfaces and has become less responsive as a result.
4. Getting up and down from the floor is more difficult than it used to be, or you avoid it entirely. This is one of the clearest functional indicators of accumulated environmental mismatch. The ranges of motion, the joint mobility, the coordination required for floor transitions have atrophied from disuse. Their absence is both a symptom and an accelerant.
